Let’s Talk Butterfly Area

Butterfly Area is run by the University of Turin (UNITO) and will host businesses, research institutes and other organisations that will then work side-by-side with University researchers and students.

Discover the Ecosystem

Butterfly Area is a strategic project run by the University of Turin.

We are creating a space inspired by the “Company-on-Campus” concept at the new University Campus, City of Science and the Environment, to facilitate research and development by hosting businesses, research institutes and other organisations.

The only example of its kind in Italy, Butterfly Area is an ecosystem that is already populated by over 300 businesses that have expressed their desire to collaborate on the central driving themes in European development, and that, together, will place Piedmont and the city of Turin firmly at the competitive heart of European technology, education and enterprise.

Butterfly Area; for those who want to live tomorrow, today!

Butterfly Area and the Campus

The Butterfly Area will physically take shape in the new University Campus City of Science and the Environment, which will accommodate over 1,000 researchers and 10,000 students and will boost knowledge and innovation in the fields of Agrifood, Biotech, Green Chemistry, Mobility, the Environment, Human and Animal Health, and Material Sciences.

The City of Science and the Environment is one of the most significant construction projects for Italian universities in recent years and is the first University branch to be dedicated to sustainability.
The research and teaching activities of the Department of Chemistry, and the Department of Life Sciences and Systems Biology will be transferred to the new campus to work alongside the Department of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences, and that of Veterinary Sciences, which are already present in the vicinity.

The idea that drives this new centre is that of facilitating collaboration between the hosted non-University organisations and University researchers and students to enable them to establish shared laboratory spaces, utilise pilot plants and access University research and instrumentation in a climate that incentivises far-reaching and enduring innovation.
